Purple Heart Trail

Purple Heart Trail

North Carolina is the first Purple Heart State. That means we are the first to have all 100 of our counties declare themselves Purple Heart Counties. North Carolina proudly participates in the Purple Heart Trail, with many cities, towns, colleges/universities, and entities across the state also designated as Purple Heart Communities. These recognitions highlight the state’s deep respect and gratitude for our combat-wounded veterans.

The Purple Heart Trail is a symbolic and honorary system of roads, highways, bridges, and monuments that pays tribute to the brave men and women who have received the Purple Heart medal for their sacrifice in service to our nation.

The goal of the Purple Heart Trail is to serve as a visible reminder to citizens that freedom is not free. Signage placed along designated routes and public spaces helps raise awareness and honor those who have given so much. These designations are established through legislation and community partnerships that recognize portions of the national road system as part of the Purple Heart Trail.

If you’re interested in honoring Purple Heart recipients by designating your North Carolina city, school, or business as a Purple Heart entity, please contact James Hicks at jghhicks@aol.com.
